Being a social cycling club, one of the key features of Marlow Riders is that we organise coffee stops each week where all our members from different speed groups can meet and chat. With safety in mind, we also ensure that all our rides are led by an experienced rider who will plan a route and lead the group. To ensure that we have appropriate resources to operate in this way, we currently cap our membership and run a waiting list.

Before applying, please be aware of the following:

  • Cycling is a physical activity. We ask that you have a fitness level to enable you to ride 25 miles in two and a half hours. If you’re not sure, you could try riding this route. If you can manage this in under 2 hours 45 minutes then you should be able to keep up with our lowest paced group.
  • We have various speed groups to accommodate most riders.  To ensure your enjoyment of our rides, please check here to ensure there is a group to suit your current level of fitness.
  • We are a social cycling club. While we do have groups of varying speeds, the club is not involved in racing, and athletic performance is not a focus of the club.
  • We are a road cycling club so all riders must have a road bike with drop handlebars.
  • Our annual membership fee is £40 and your membership will renew on 1 April in the calendar year after you join.
  • We ask all our members to be a member of either Cycling UK or British Cycling at a membership level that provides third party liability insurance.

Following is an outline of the process to join the club. Please refer below for full details of each step.

  1. When you fill in your application, we need to know what pace you ride at so we know which of our speed groups to start you with. We ask you to provide a link to a ride of minimum 30 miles/50km, preferably with some elevation. An ideal would be around 50 km with around 500 m elevation, which is what we would call a 1% route; i.e. the elevation is 500 m divided by the distance, 50km (50,000 metres) = 1%. If you don’t already have such a ride recorded, you could ride and record this route. If you’re not sure how to load the route to your computer, this guide might be helpful.

We won’t be able to process your application if we can’t access the information. The following resources might be helpful to ensure you do this step correctly:

How to get the activity URL from Strava
How to ensure the activity privacy is set to Everyone

If you have any questions, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

  2. We manage our memberships and the waitlist on RiderHQ. If you don’t already have a RiderHQ account, you will need to create one. Then sign in and apply to the waiting list. The application asks some questions about your cycling experience and aspirations. Your answers do not influence whether we accept your application, they are just designed to help us support you in getting started with the club and place you in a group that is appropriate to your speed and experience. The waiting time can be anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on when we have membership places available. The application asks you to enter your British Cycling or Cycling UK membership number. If you are not currently a member, you can save your application without the member number and then update your application when you have it. Note that we won’t approve your application until all required information is provided, including your BC or CUK membership number and a link to your Strava ride. If you are joining British Cycling for the first time, you can use the code MEMFRND at checkout to receive a £10 discount on your first year’s membership.

  3. When we have an opening, we will approve your application. Before asking you to commit, we may invite you to join an intro ride if you or we are not sure we are the best club to meet your aspirations. If it seems like we are a good fit for you, we will approve your application. You will receive an email from RiderHQ asking you to pay your membership fee.

  4. Please pay your membership fee within 3 weeks of receiving the email. If you’ve changed your mind and don’t plan to join, please let us know. If we don’t receive your payment within 3 weeks of approval, we may offer your place to the next person on the waiting list.

  5. Once you’ve paid your membership fee, you will receive an email with a link to our New Member Welcome Pack. Please read this as it contains important information about how the club works, and how to sign up to rides and our communications channels.

If you need any help throughout the application/joining process, please contact us and we will be happy to help. We look forward to riding with you soon.
